Последний в мире северный белый носорог-самец по кличке Судан может умереть, так и не оставив после себя потомства. Душераздирающей историей животного поделился биолог Даниэль Шнайдер.
«Хотите знать, как выглядит вымирание? Это последний в мире самец северного белого носорога. Последний. Больше не будет никогда», — написал он в Twitter.
По его словам, в мире осталось еще две самки этого удивительного вида, однако 44-летний Судан слишком стар для размножения. А для сохранения биоматериалов носорога и искусственного оплодотворения оставшихся самок нужно 9 миллионов долларов. Шансы того, что со смертью Судана исчезнет целый вид животных, крайне велики.
В дикой природе представителей этого вида уже не осталось — их истребили браконьеры ради рогов, которые очень высоко ценятся на черном рынке. Рейнджеры, которые его охраняют, сильно рискуют своими жизнями.
